Is being an artist a job like any other? 🧑‍🎨
Between divine inspiration and daily work, where does artistic creation really lie? Innate talent or acquired technique? Is it a solitary genius or a transferable skill? This playlist tackles preconceived ideas and asks what does - or doesn't - distinguish the artist from the craftsman. It's a fascinating look at the men and women who turn their passion into a profession that's not quite like any other…

As an art history channel, we are constantly analyzing and criticizing art and asking questions about how we consume art. A couple of weeks ago, I looked at art made by AI, and asked the question is it art? What makes something art? Is it the artistic process? The message the art is trying to convey? Is it the technology or method used? Today we will take a look at Art for Art’s Sake. Does art need purpose? What is the purpose of art without a purpose? James Whistler’s 1874 painting “Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket” is a good example of this question. How does the artistic movement of aestheticism differ from didactic art? Or, as Duchamp coined it, Retinal art? When does art need to convey a message? Does it need to convey one at all?
